Survive Freshers by Hitting Up Our Favourite Takeaways

Unless you’re completely out of the loop or have recently graduated into young professional-hood, you’ll likely know that Freshers Week is finally upon us, and once again, we can almost hear the cheers and laughter from our office!

We know that during this week of fun, settling in, and some partying here and there, that you’re not going to want to cook – like, at all. So, we thought we’d bring you our favourite top picks for the route of all happiness and even the cure for most hangovers, FOOD. Whether you’re looking for a smashing pre- or post-night out meal, or even just something to enjoy whilst you get to know your neighbours, these takeaways will definitely line your stomach – and with some of the country’s best takeaways right here in Manchester, these picks will not disappoint.

The Spärrows

Known as a European café/restaurant, thanks to the owners hailing from Italy and Poland, this little gem just north of Ancoats serves up numerous gorgeous, authentic, and hearty dishes. Expect generous portions of their signature käse spätzle and pelmeni (dumplings!), as well as some specially selected beers and spirits. This is one classy takeaway joint that is sure to become a go-to throughout your studies.

The Hip Hop Chip Shop

The food here more than lives up to the amazing name, and they deliver locally to Ancoats – so if you live centrally, you’re sorted. These guys put a smashing Philippines twist on your fave chippy options and honestly, you’ll struggle to choose. We urge you to try the banana ketchup and masala fish, and trust us, what these folks don’t know about flavour isn’t worth knowing. As a bonus, they also have plenty of vegan and veggie options, so what more could you ask for?!

Yang Sing

Situated on Princess Street, this restaurant has been a Manc staple since the family opened it in 1977, and whether you’re dining in or taking out, the food is phenomenal. Due to their popularity, they work with several of the usual delivery providers to ensure that wherever you are across the city, you’ll get your Chinese takeaway fix. The menu is huge, so the set ‘banquets’ are a brilliant option to try new dishes, and you’ll get so much food for the price that it’ll do your lunch the following day as well!

This & That Café

Located in the Northern Quarter, the ‘curry canteen & café’ This & That is surrounded by plenty of other hipster venues, and wow you’re in for a treat. You get such huge portions for your buck, and the quality of the food is unrivalled, meaning this will likely become your fave go-to at lunchtime. Hardcore fans know when to visit, as the menu alters each day, but if there are a few of you looking to place an order then give the hampers a go. They’re literally rammed with curries, naans, rice, bhajis, and sides. The best ice breaker for making new pals.

Common Bar

Another NQ gem is this arty, Scandi-inspired restaurant that we can confidently say serve the best pizza in the city. Nells Pizza run the kitchen at Common and pride themselves on their 22-inch pies, and we personally love the ‘Original Sausage Material’ and ‘Upside Down Margarita’. You can also walk up to bag a slice after 9pm, which is perfect if you’re feeling the effects of a few too many in one of the local bars.

Whether you’re a fresher or just heading out during the week, we hope you have a great time and soak up all the great vibes the city puts out when new and old students show up. Drink responsibly, but most importantly, eat plenty – Manchester really does have it all when it comes to foodie options and luckily for you, you’re going to have plenty of time to sample it all!

We’d love to hear what you’ve been ordering and if you were impressed by our seriously delicious recommendations; so as ever, let us know via our socials.
