Old Trafford History – the ‘Theatre of Dreams’

Manchester is revered around the world for numerous reasons: it’s the first industrialised city in the world, the birthplace of the world’s thinnest material graphene and the home of the first free public library in the United Kingdom (where Marx and Engels met for the first time).

Manchester is also the birthplace of the world’s first computer (built by Charles Babbage) and the UK’s oldest railway station, which opened in 1830.

Yet, most of all, Manchester is the capital city of football. With some of the most impressive football teams in history (Manchester United F.C. and Manchester City F.C.), football is certainly a significant part of Manchester’s DNA, where local families either grow up supporting the ‘reds’ or the ‘blues’.

Exploring Old Trafford History

Designed in 1902 by Scottish architect Archibald Leitch (back when Manchester United F.C. were still called Newton Heath), Manchester United’s stadium holds a capacity of 74,994 people and is the second largest football ground in the United Kingdom after Wembley Stadium.

Despite being one of the most famous football stadiums in the country, history hasn’t always been kind to Old Trafford. Whilst being used as a depot by the military in 1939 (despite still being used to play football), Old Trafford was bombed by the Germans in 1940.

It was attacked again during World War II in 1941, destroying most of the stadium this time and forcing Manchester United to play at Cornbrook Cold Storage.

Eventually, the War Damage Commission offered £22,278 to Manchester United to rebuild their football stadium, which was later nicknamed the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ by United legend Bobby Charlton.

Beyond football, Old Trafford is also home to the legendary Old Trafford Cricket Ground, further emphasising its position in sport.

The area is also incredibly well connected to Manchester city centre, with Trafford Bar tram station being only two stops away from Deansgate-Castlefield.
