The top 6 cycle routes to explore in Newcastle

One of our favourite things about Newcastle is how beautiful the city is – and with the sun shining, what better time to celebrate Cycle to Work Day than looking at some of the best routes around the city?

Strap your knee pads and helmet on, it’s time for an adventure.

Short and Sweet Cycle Paths

We aren’t all cycling pros, and sometimes it’s nice just to get out and enjoy the fresh air without having to squeeze yourself into tight leggings. These are a few of our favourite ‘beginner’ cycle paths.

Newcastle to Tynemouth

This is a perfect choice for the basic cycler, being a flat, short, and all-around easy 12-mile ride with some stunning seaside views. Can you see the sea yet? Shout when you can!

Dragon Cycle Trail

The Dragon Cycle train is a National Trust route, exploring the woodland in a speedy 3 miles, with views across Northumberland. It loops around too, so no cycling too far and then being too tired to come back home. Win win.

Stepping things up

If you’re looking for something with a bit more challenge to it, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Welcome to the more advanced cycling paths that won’t make you feel like you’re training for the Tour De France.

Newcastle to Consett

This is a great cycle for those among us looking for some variation, with gentle hills, beautiful river views, and great places to stop for lunch along the way. It will also take you right past the Angel of the North, which we’d say is worth the 40-mile round route.

Tynemouth to Blyth Beach

This route is our personal favourite, with some of the most beautiful views you’ll find. You’ll follow the coast for almost the entire 36-mile route, and if you fancy it, you can have a pit stop before you head back to dip your toes in the ocean.

For the hardcore cyclists out there…

We knew some of you just wouldn’t settle for anything less than the biggest and best routes around the ‘toon. We’ll share them with you, but don’t come peddling to us when your legs get sore on the way home!

Haltwhistle to Newcastle

This is a stunning remote route, with some pretty steep hills, but the views are 110% worth it. Clocking in at a beastly 46 miles, if this doesn’t leave you with jelly legs, nothing will.

Haltwhistle to Ashgill Force

Probably the hardest ride that you can face, going through the highest market town in England, you’ll get to see everything the North has to offer - from vast valleys to the distant peaks across the 50-mile trek.

We can’t wait to see which routes you choose, and we hope that you enjoy the views as much as we do. Know another route that we’ve missed but should know about? Let us know on our socials @ncapartments_!
