The end of your lease is near, and while moving out can feel like a whirlwind, making sure you get your full deposit back is definitely worth your time. Whether it’s your first time handing back the keys or you just want a quick refresher, we’ve got your back. Here are four tips renters often overlook that could make the difference between a full refund and unexpected charges.
Once you’ve finished cleaning and packing, take a full set of photos of the apartment. Even if you think everything’s spotless, having dated images gives you proof of the condition you left it in. Snap floors, windows, kitchen appliances, inside cupboards- anything that shows you’ve left the place just as you found it. You’ll thank yourself later if anything’s questioned.
That drawer that sticks? The door that’s slightly off its hinge? Minor maintenance issues you’ve been living with might seem harmless, but your agency may see them as damage. If it's something quick and safe to fix- like tightening a loose handle or adjusting a cabinet door- it’s worth doing. A five-minute fix now could save you a chunk of your deposit.
If your rental came with curtains, rugs, or upholstery, give them a refresh. Dust, hair, and lingering smells can lead to cleaning fees, especially if they're noticed during inspection. Even a quick vacuum or a once-over with a fabric spray can go a long way. Don’t forget to wipe down blinds and air out the rooms to leave everything feeling fresh.
Before you officially check out, walk through the place with fresh eyes. Pretend you're the one inspecting it for the first time. Open every cupboard, look under furniture if any is included, check the fridge and freezer for missed items, and make sure no lightbulbs are out. It’s amazing what you catch when you’re not rushing.
Getting your deposit back shouldn’t be a mystery- and with a little extra care, it doesn’t have to be. Already moved out and have a tip we missed? Share it with us- we’d love to hear your tried-and-true tricks!
