Newcastle is known for being one of the friendliest cities in the country, and when it comes to Pride Month, we only get more welcoming. Whether you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community, or just simply showing your support, we’ve got plenty for you to check out over the month.
Looking to get out and about during Pride Month? You’ll never run out of things to do in Newcastle, but this month especially we’ve got some great spots for you to check out.
The Yard is the oldest gay bar in Newcastle after opening its doors in the early 80’s for the local gay community in the toon. It’s still open today and even run by the original owner – what a legend – and is open daily with all sorts of events and entertainment on to keep things spicy.
Whether you want to get involved in Game Show Monday, Thirsty Thursday, or are just looking to see some of the incredible drag acts that are performing throughout the week, The Yard is one that you absolutely need to check out.
Known as the thriving gay scene in Newcastle filled to the brim with bars and nightclubs, the affectionately named ‘Pink Triangle’ is a must-visit if you’re celebrating Pride in Newcastle. It’s continuing to grow as more bars and clubs open on the edges of the triangle – and at this rate, they’re going to have to rename it to the Pink Square, although that doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, does it?
There’s a place for everyone across the Pink Triangle, so whether you’re looking for a wild night out until the sun comes up, or more of a quiet evening with a few friends in an inclusive area, this is the place to be.
We love a good day – or night – out, so if you’re looking to fill your weekends this Pride Month, these will take your fancy.
Switch Bar is the ultimate party bar on Newcastle’s Gay Scene, hosting some absolutely incredible events that will keep you coming back for more.
Hosting their own version of Drag Race (aptly named Drag Idol, of course) you can get involved and pick your favourite local drag queen throughout their competitions, watching them perform and compete to be the very best in Newcastle.
They also host afterparties for various music and comedy gigs in the area, so you know that the door is always open ready and waiting for you if you fancy popping in.
If you’re looking for a space to be your true self – and your true self can be a little nerdy at times – then Travelling Man is where you need to be. You’ll find them on Grainger Street, offering out all the standard comic book stock, but with an added twist.
Travelling Man also offer specific LGBTQ+ nights, closing the shop and hosting boardgames to anyone who fancies coming along and trying their hand at the game of choice. They’re also known for hosting various LGBTQ+ events, and even have a dedicated queer section of merchandise and stories. It’s an incredibly friendly atmosphere and you can pick up some cool stuff too – win win, right?
Whether you’re celebrating Pride Month in June, waiting for Northern Pride in July, or – as we hope, and we will be – getting involved in both of them, it’s always good to know a few bits ahead of time so you know what to expect.
Every Pride weekend has its own theme, and we reckon that this is the perfect fit for the North. Loud, proud, and not afraid to be who we are should be celebrated for everyone, and we can’t wait to show our support for our LGBTQ+ community who deserve to be visible and appreciated.
Yes, you read that right, we’re getting some stardom for Pride this year, with the brilliant Ginger Johnson headlining the event. Yes, we know, we’re screaming too. We’ll also see James Bait and Whigfield blessing us with their presence at Northern Pride this year who are definitely going to put on a show we’ll all remember.
We hope that you’re as excited as we are to celebrate Pride in Newcastle this year and that we see you out and about if you’re attending. Enjoy yourselves, stay safe, and don’t forget to tag us on Instagram.
