Our 4 Favourite Restaurants in Newcastle

One of the best things about the toon is the huge range of places to go and enjoy some good scran. Whether you’re after something new for a night out, or just want to gorge yourself on some filthy but delicious food, we’ve got you covered. Here’s our four recommendations for places to try in the city.

Fat Hippo Underground

If you don’t know Fat Hippo, you’re missing out – but don’t worry, we’re here to enlighten you and get you on-board. Fat Hippo Underground is, you guessed it, underground, and it does give the place a bit of an edge – it’s a place you won’t forget in a hurry.

We say that, like you’d be able to forget this food. It’s called Fat Hippo for a reason, you’ll feel like you need to roll yourself out of the place by the time you’re done. Have you ever felt that your burger would be way better with some peanut butter on it? Us neither, and yet, when we tried it – perfection.

Trakol

You’ll find Trakol nestled under the Tyne Bridge, just a few minutes away from our building, and they share the same stunning views. It’s an open-fire restaurant, so lots of showmanship and excitement, a great option for a date night.

They pride themselves on their sustainability and avoid any waste where they can, which we absolutely love. It’s a really relaxed, calm atmosphere, but the quality is next level, and their menu rotates depending on the season and availability, so you know that your meal is as fresh as it can be.

Aveika

We’ll take any excuse to get a visit in to Aveika. It’s a unique, creative menu with a relaxing but incredibly stylish atmosphere, boasting a modern interpretation on traditional Japanese foods. Their aim is to rework classic dishes with a twist, while still only using premium, fresh ingredients. Let us tell you – they nailed it.

We always go for their dragon roll, with rock prawns and, if we’re feeling fancy, the lobster robosuta. There’s plenty on the menu to try, and we bet that you’ll find a favourite in record time.

Uno’s Trattoria

Another hidden gem under the Tyne Bridge, this family-run restaurant has been going since 1989, and it’s not hard to see how they’ve kept things going this long.

Serving up the finest traditional Italian food, we’re an absolute sucker for their bruschetta, and their rustic pizza – if you still have room after that feast, we cannot recommend the white chocolate and raspberry panna cotta enough. It will change your life.

Whatever your preference, we bet there’s something perfect in this list for you. Do you have a favourite spot in the city? Let us know on our socials!
