There’s nothing quite like putting on your favourite film, kicking back and just relaxing. With National Cinema Day coming up, it’s caused quite the stir in our teams on what the best genre is, and the best film from there. We’ve put together some of our top picks to let you decide the true winner.
We love a little rom-com moment, and we bet that deep down you can’t resist them either. If you don’t know where to start, these are our recommendations.
You know it’s a classic rom-com when Hugh Grant is the lead. Playing an unsuccessful bookshop owner, he encounters the world’s most beautiful woman and actress, Anna. Running into each other time and time again, but the pressure of her fame plays its part in their struggles to being together.
Adapted from the Shakespeare play, The Taming of the Shrew, this film introduces us to two sisters, Bianca, and her older sister, Kat. Their dad has one rule – Bianca can’t date until Kat does. So, a new student Cameron devises a plan to get Kat a date so he can make a move himself on Bianca. Unsurprisingly, this all blows up, and is a heartbreaking love story that everyone should see at least once.
Not feeling the rom-com vibe? Fine, it’s time to hit the Sci-Fi genre.
Few people don’t know about the red pill vs. the blue pill, and it’s no wonder why The Matrix is such a popular film. With our main character, known as Neo, living a double life – a computer programmer by day, and a hacker at night, he is contacted by Morpheus, an infamous computer hacker branded a terrorist. Morpheus works with Neo to reveal that not all is as it seems, and that there’s a super-powerful computer programme committed to stopping them.
Often disputed as to what category this sits in, we can assure you that it is indeed, a sci-fi film. Based on Isla Nublar, a brand-new park has been opened where they have genetically engineers dinosaurs. It doesn’t take long for havoc to unravel, with dinosaurs escaping their enclosures and going on rampages across the park. Old but gold, they went on to make another 5 films around this – you think they’d have learnt their lesson around the 3rd time, wouldn’t you?
There’s nothing quite like a good action film to get your heart racing and keep you on the edge of your seat. These are our top choices.
Another film that opened the gates to a multi-film franchise, Mission Impossible tells us the story of Ethan Hunt and his team that have to track down a terrifying, deadly weapon that, in the wrong hands, could destroy the world. Ethan is forced to make some near-impossible choices as he has to decide what’s more important – the fate of humanity, or those he cares about most.
Now look, we’re not about to entertain the old ‘is Die Hard a Christmas Film’ debate, (it’s not), we’re here to talk action. John McClane, NYPD cop, is attending a Christmas party in which a heist breaks out, with the entire party taken hostage – apart from John, who manages to sneak off. It’s up to him to stop the heist and save the members of the party – and he sure gets creative along the way.
No matter your favourite genre, we hope that you take some time to watch your favourite film this National Cinema Day – we’d love to hear what your favourite film is over on our socials.
