The Spring Solstice, or March Equinox, is now only two days away (20th March for those unaware!) and officially welcomes in the first day of spring – we can’t wait. Translated from the Latin terms ‘aequl’ and ‘nox’, equinox means ‘equal night’ – where the day and night are an exact 12-hour split. This is the perfect time to embrace the new season and say goodbye to the long nights and cold weather and throw yourselves into the long sunny evenings and warmer weather that we’ve all been waiting for. So, we’ve put together a list of things you can do this Sunday to celebrate and say hello to Spring, enjoy!
One of the most popular ways to spend the Spring Solstice is to spend time outside and surround yourself with elements of nature. This can be in the form of a walk, or hike, a bike ride, watching the sunrise or the sunset – anything that allows you to observe the new life that’s unfolding around you and welcome in the new season.
Make yourself a meal with your family and friends, or just a group of people who are important to you, and that you want to spend your time with! There are all sorts of seasonal spring foods that you can use for this, from early spring greens, to eggs, sprouts, local breads and produce – a great excuse to visit a small business in the area and try something you haven’t had before.
This is a great way to celebrate both the solstice and the rapidly approaching Easter Sunday – whether you choose to use real eggs and hollow them out to paint the shells, or if you prefer, decorate wooden eggs that you can keep for longer. Some choose to decorate chocolate eggs – a more temporary option, but a super tasty one that will definitely put a smile on your face.
Meditation and yoga are one of the best activities to create inner peace and balance – which is exactly what celebrating the solstice is all about. The balance of night and day, and the start of a new season as the winter ends, is the perfect time to reflect on yourself and start fresh.
These are just some of the ways you can spend the day of the solstice, but there are plenty of other fantastic options, so if there’s something we missed that you’re going to be doing this week then let us know!
