Calling all cocktail (and mocktail) lovers… It’s your time to shine. Saturday 13th May marks World Cocktail Day, and we don’t know about you, but we can’t think of a better place to spend it than in the ‘toon.
One thing Newcastle isn’t short of is a good watering hole — and, let’s face it, us Geordies do cocktails like no one else. So, sip back and relax. Here’s our guide to making the most of World Cocktail Day in the best cocktails bars in Newcastle.
P.S — not a big drinker? Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about you (you can find our top spots for the best mocktails at the end of this article).
There’s something quite sophisticated about a classic cocktail, don’t you think? If you agree, look no further. From marvellous mojitos to mouth-watering margs, there’s nothing old fashioned about these drinks (sorry). On that note, here’s our favourite spot to find the best classic cocktails in Newcastle.
Masters of classic cocktails, unique creations, and everything in between, it’s no wonder that Tiger Hornsby is one of Newcastle’s best cocktail bars. With firm faves like the French Martini, Cosmopolitan and Pina Colada all on the menu, Tiger Hornsby is definitely the place to go if you’re a lover of all things traditional.
What’s more, it’s Cocktail Hour all night from Sunday through to Thursday, and until 5PM on Fridays and Saturdays. What’s not to love?
You can get into the spirit (pardon the pun), by booking a table on their website.
If you’re looking to shake things up with your next cocktail, these quirky creations are sure to hit the spot. Don’t think popping candy goes well with rum? Think again… Here are our go-tos for cocktails with an edge.
Serving up R&B-inspired cocktails from their Neville Street bar seven days a week, Jalou have got Insta-worthy cocktails down to a tee. Cocktail menu highlights include the honey-drenched ‘Bee-Yonce’, the minty-fresh ‘Hendricks Lamar’, and the downright delicious ‘Cookie Monster’ (that comes topped with white chocolate-flavoured whipped cream, no less).
If you want to try this sweet spot where cocktails meet dessert, head over to their website to book your table now.
Holy Hobo liken the feeling of stepping into their bar to ‘slipping into warm, soft PJs’ or ‘the feeling when you see your crush’. Well, we don’t know about you, but we’re sold already!
Providing the ‘toon with good vibes, good food, and, most importantly, good drinks, Holy Hobo has quite a cult following — and we’re not surprised. But what are the cocktails like? Well, we’re glad you asked!
Expect crowd-pleasers you know and love, like Aperol Spritz, mixed right in with wacky concoctions like the Jammie Dodger-topped ‘We’re Jammin’ at this cosy Jesmond bar. We’re seriously eyeing up the ‘Bubblegum Daquiri’, but we’ll let you make your own mind up.
Take a look at their menu yourself, or book your table, on their website.
Fancy taking it easy? Not the biggest fan of alcohol? Don’t panic — we’ve got you. Here are two bars that offer the tastiest mocktails around, completely hangover-free.
High Bridge’s Pleased to Meet You is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the drinks, with live music every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and two outdoor seating areas for soaking up the sun (when we get it!)
Don’t get us wrong, the drinks are something special, too. PTMY’s low and no-serves are some of the best in the city, with greats like the ‘Passionfruit and Elderflower Fizz’ and the refreshing ‘Orange & Rosemary Smash’ on offer.
Top tip: tables of under 10 are walk-in only, so be sure to get there early to secure a spot! You can find out more about PTMY on their website or over on their Instagram.
Described as ‘the prettiest dining experience in the city’, Leila Lily’s is the ultimate in girly, floral décor that’s sure to take your breath away — and that’s before we get onto the lush mocktails on offer.
Serving up virgin versions of all your favourites alongside their own creations, this mocktail menu is not to be missed. Personally, we’re torn between the ‘No-No Colada’, and the ‘Strawberry Lemonade’, but as they’re alcohol-free, we might just try both!
You can find out more and check out Leila Lily's menu on their website.
