Summer is right around the corner, and if you’re anything like us, you’re already dreaming of full-blown, flag-cracking, sunglasses weather. And what goes hand-in-hand with hot days? You guessed it, ice cream.

National Ice Cream Day lands on July 19th this year — when longer, warmer days will (hopefully) be in full swing. But if you’re a Newcastle newcomer, you might not know the best places to get your frozen treats from quite yet, but don’t panic. We’ve got you covered.

So, if you want to get the scoop on where to get your ice cream fix this summer, look no further. Check out our handy list of the coolest ice cream vendors in the ‘toon below.

Something traditional

At Newcastle Apartments, we see no shame in being a fan of good old-fashioned vanilla — we mean, it’s a favourite for a reason.

If you’re a fan of the classics done well (and believe us, these vendors do them exceptionally) check out our favourite spots in Newcastle for some more traditional scoops.

Mark Toney

A North East staple for over a century, Mark Toney offer delicious hand-made dairy ice creams, all made from an authentic Italian family recipe passed down through the generations. Today, Mark Toney’s ice creams are made with only the finest ingredients, and the business is still family-run.

When you visit Mark Toney’s friendly cafes, you can pick from classics like Traditional Dairy Vanilla, Mint Choc Chip, or Raspberry Ripple, or try something a little more out-there (but just as tasty) like Banoffee Swirl, or Blue Bubblegum.

Choose your flavour and check out the rest of their menu on Mark Toney’s website.

Di Meos

Di Meo’s

As another Italian ice cream connoisseur, Di Meo’s history is almost as rich as their flavours. With the business being established in the North East way back in the early 1900s by Italian oliver farmer Isidoro Di Meo, it’s since gone from strength to strength, and is now run by family members in both Whitley Bay and Newcastle’s riverside.

Flavour highlights include the classic vanilla, pistachio, and strawberry, but we’ve got our sights set on their Battenburg gelato. Which flavour will you go for first?

You can find out more about Di Meo’s locations, menu, and more on their website.

Something a bit extra

Feeling adventurous? Then you’re in luck! For when Neapolitan just won’t cut it, here are the best ice cream parlours in Newcastle for weird and wonderful scoops.

I Scream For Pizza

Besides coming up with great names for ice cream shops, I Scream For Pizza also make pretty great sundaes (and, you guessed it, pizzas) from their store on Newcastle’s Quayside.

Choose from mouth-watering menu items like The Big Apple Sundae (Fior Di Latte soft serve, Ginger Cake, Apple Crumble, and Salted Caramel Sauce) and the Whey Aye Cherry Pie (Morello Cherry and almond tart with vegan vanilla and lime zest). Oh, and if you fancy a tipple? You’re in luck —you can enjoy a few scoops of I Scream’s Draught Lager or IPA alongside your ice cream.

Creams Cafe

For a one-stop shop for all your dessert cravings, head to Creams on Grainger Street. We’re talking everything from classic sundaes, to waffles, crepes, and shakes. Sounds perfect, right?

We’re eyeing up the Oreo Overload Sundae (Oreo gelato, vanilla ice cream, crushed oreos and milk chocolate sauce), but we’ll let you decide which dessert you’ll try first!

Head over to their website to choose your new favourite dessert.
