What’s on in Manchester this January

One of the best things about living in Manchester (we think!) is that there’s always something going on. Whether you’re studying at one of Manchester’s prestigious universities or working in the city – there’s always something for you to do. At Manchester Apartments, we’ve been keeping up with the events held by Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester, just so that we can share them all with you. The universities in the city have got something on for everyone in the coming weeks, and we’ve picked out some of our favs that we would love to attend ourselves.

Manchester Met

If you’re looking for something to distract yourself on the 24th January, then be sure to head over to Manchester Metropolitan University, who’s throwing a refreshers fair for students, with a huge amount on offer. With student discounts up for grabs as well as some freebies and Domino’s pizza, it’s an opportunity for students interested in joining any clubs or societies to speak to existing members and find out more about what it means to sign up. From football and rugby societies to Harry Potter clubs and Disney group watching sessions, there’s plenty on offer no matter your hobby. There are also various cultural societies, including the Hong Kong Society, Islamic Society, and the Manchester Hindu Society, which can be an incredibly helpful support system for any international students feeling homesick.

As well as this, on the 26th there is a super helpful workshop for writing a CV and cover letter, ideal for students wanting to find work alongside or after their studies, and keen to stand out from the crowd. Manchester Met also offer weekly mindfulness sessions along with slots to help manage stress, which can be an absolute lifesaver for students that might be struggling with the pressure of any deadlines coming in the next few weeks.

The University of Manchester

Beginning on the 26th of January and running until Mid-April, the University of Manchester are hosting The Door Opened: 1980’s China, an exhibition created by Adrian Bradshaw, the iconic English photographer. Exploring the time that Bradshaw spent in Beijing over the space of 30 years, it's a unique balance of candid and posed shots that show the true life of China in the 80’s – when most of the population was under 25 and the energy created by the residents there changed art, entrepreneurial drive, and industrialism across the world. Described as a vivid record of a pivotal period in modern history that deserves greater understanding, this is truly an exhibit not to be missed.

There is also a weekly drop-in session called Manchester Connect, which is a free online service for anyone interested in learning more about becoming a prospective student. Offering advice on the University itself, along with the courses on offer, entry requirements, and information about student life in Manchester, these sessions are great for anyone interested in learning more about attending the University.

With the universities offering various events over the coming weeks, which are you looking forward to the most? If we’ve missed any, get in touch and let us know on our socials!
