Important Documents

Let’s get the boring stuff out of the way first. You’ll want to keep paperwork safe, because you know how it goes – if you have it, you won’t need it. If you can’t find it, you’ll need it, and we don’t want you losing your head trying to find it in the middle of move-in.

  • Some form of photo ID, like your passport or a driving licence
  • Your University Admissions Acceptance letter
  • Any contract for your accommodation
  • Any documents from Student Finance
  • A bank card
  • Any student discount cards you qualify for
  • Any vaccination history
  • Any prescription copies you may need.

Having these on hand will just make life easier should you need them.

Electricals

Chances are you’ve got several electricals that you want to bring with you, but these are some of the most popular ones that we tend to see.

  • Mobile phone and charger
  • Laptop, case, and charger
  • A printer with extra ink
  • USB memory sticks – you can never have too many backups
  • Extension leads, especially if you’ve got a lot of electricals
  • Headphones and charger
  • Games consoles and any additions you need

Your accommodation will be your home for the next year, so it’s important to make sure it feels nice and homey – especially if this is your first time living away from home. You can’t make too many big changes to your accommodation, but you can make it feel like yours, and bringing things that are important to you are key to that.

Kitchen Items

Often, when you go into your first year of university, if you have shared utilities like kitchens and bathrooms, you’ll end up sharing with the other people there, but you still want to have your own items. The last thing you want is to get halfway through making your tea and realising you’ve got nothing to eat it off.

  • Cutlery set
  • Plates
  • Bowls
  • Mugs and glasses
  • Tupperware
  • Sharp knives
  • Scissors
  • Bottle opener
  • Wooden spoons/utensil set
  • A grater
  • Tea towels.

Often, there are electricals like toasters and microwaves already provided, so wait until you’ve moved in before you get too carried away. You can always pick extra items up when you’re settled.

Bedroom Bits

Furniture will be provided in your accommodation, but you’ll want to bring some bits to flesh it out and make it your own.

  • Bedding – things like a duvet and duvet covers, pillows, and blankets
  • Mattress protector
  • Clothes
  • Coat hangers
  • Laundry basket
  • Decorative items – books, ornaments, etc
  • Study materials for your desk – pens, pencils, post-it notes, notepads, etc

It makes the world of difference and will allow you to create a space that’s much more you.

Bathroom Essentials

The bathroom is where a lot of people forget to bring their essentials, which means having to make an emergency trip out before you’ve even finished unpacking. Avoid the stress, we got you covered.

  • Towels
  • Bathroom kit – think toothbrush and paste, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, moisturiser
  • Toilet roll – you CANNOT have too much toilet roll, trust us
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Razors

These ones might seem a bit obvious, but they can be easily forgotten, so we’re here to remind you.

  • A backpack
  • Umbrella
  • Water bottle
  • Thermos flask
  • Hot water bottle
  • Hot drinks sachets
  • Plastic bags – you’ll be surprised how often you need one when you don’t have any!

This guide should help you if you’re finding yourself overwhelmed while packing – if you’re getting ready to move in with us while you study, we cannot wait for you to arrive.
