Manchester Apartments’ Moving To Uni Checklist

If you’re getting ready to join one of the established universities in Manchester, we bet you’re gearing up to pack and make sure you’ve got everything you need to make yourself at home without bringing a load of bits you’ll never use.

There’s a few things you’ll want to make sure you have with you, just in case –

  • A form of ID – a passport, or driving license
  • Your University Admissions Acceptance letter
  • Accommodation contract
  • Student Finance documents
  • Any Scholarship or bursary documents
  • Bank card
  • Student Discount Cards
  • Vaccination history (if needed)
  • Prescription copies (if needed)

Making sure you have all of these to hand will just give you an extra layer of security. You might not need them, but if you do, you’ll know exactly where they are and not face the panic of scrambling to find them.

Some people will want to take more, and some less, so find the sweet spot that works for you.

  • Mobile phone & charger
  • Laptop, case, & charger
  • Printer & ink (more of a preference but likely will save you money in the long-term as most universities will charge you per page printed)
  • USB memory sticks – always have a backup copy of your work!
  • Extension leads
  • Headphones
  • Games consoles (if you have them)

You’re going to be living in your new accommodation for the year, so you want to make it nice and homey, especially if you’ve never lived away from home before. Bring things that make you happy, and that provide comfort – while you can’t decorate your room too heavily without being at risk of causing damage, you can easily make it your own.

Kitchen Items

In your first year of Uni, it’s likely that you’ve got a shared kitchen space with other students. Where possible, it’s worth trying to find who you’ll be living with online before you move – there are usually various Facebook groups set up that you can join and go from there. This way, you can narrow down who’s bringing what, so you don’t end up with 6 toasters and 11 kettles.

You do, however, want to bring things so you know that you’re covered. No one wants to eat their dinner out of an abandoned pan with a plastic fork.

  • Cutlery set (trust us, you’ll end up losing multiple spoons with no idea how they just disappear, so back-ups are a win)
  • A few plates
  • Bowls
  • A couple of mugs and glasses
  • Tupperware
  • Sharp knives
  • Scissors
  • Bottle opener
  • Wooden spoons/utensil set
  • Grater
  • Tea towels

You’ll likely end up sharing bits and bobs with other housemates, but it’s always best to have your own base kit just in case.

Bedroom Bits

Your accommodation should provide you with all the furniture you need, but you’ll want to bring some things to make it homier and more comfortable.

  • Bedding – duvet, pillows, a few duvet cover sets
  • Mattress protector
  • Coat hangers
  • Clothes
  • Laundry basket
  • Decorative items – whatever you like
  • Study material for your desk – pens, highlighters, post-it notes, notepads

You’ll be surprised at how much having a few home touches can change your bedroom, and how much more comfortable you feel by personalising it a bit.

Bathroom Essentials

Whether you’ve managed to swing yourself an en-suite, or if you’re sharing with others, you want to make sure you’ve got everything you need for a refreshing shower and freshen up after your move-in.

  • Towels
  • Bathroom kit – toothbrush and paste, shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel
  • Toilet roll – this is the thing a lot of people forget
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Razors
  • Sanitary items where required
  • Medications where required

Other Bits and Bobs

Some of these might be obvious, but you’d be surprised at how often the simple things slip peoples’ minds.

  • A backpack
  • Umbrella
  • Water bottle
  • Thermos if you’re an avid coffee drinker
  • Hot water bottle
  • Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate sachets – just to have on hand
  • Plastic bags – save on buying them for your food shops

We hope that you’re excited in the run-up to your move to University, and that you’re already preparing for the Freshers Week line-ups. If you haven’t already checked these out, each university will announce events they have going, so get yourself down to those freshers fairs, meet new people, and get all the free stuff you can – it’s worth it!
