Studying in the city: Our top 5 student attractions in Manchester

If you’re one of the thousands of students moving to Manchester to study this year, then you’re in great company. Whether you’re studying at Man Met or the University of Manchester, you’re definitely going to want to know more about this awesome city we call home and the student hotspots you’ll likely spend most of your time in (other than the library, of course!) From the best bars in the city to the most amazing hiking trails, we’ve got you covered.

NQ64

An arcade bar packed to the ceiling with retro video games – from Mortal Kombat to the beloved Mario Kart – this is one of the most popular hotspots in the Northern Quarter for anyone with a serious competitive streak. Found tucked away on Short Street and open from 4 pm, there’s no need to book! Just walk in and buy yourself some tokens, and let the fun begin.

As well as some of the best games from our childhood, NQ64 also have an array of game-themed cocktails to add that extra level of nostalgia and fun.

Blackstone Edge

Offering stunning views across Manchester (especially Littleborough and Rochdale) Blackstone Edge is one of Manchester’s most beautiful hiking trails and is a great option for anyone wanting to get away and make the most of some fresh air. With several different paths that you can pick from, you’ll see several different landmarks on your ramble whether you’re after a quick stroll or a full-on hike.

Keep your eye out for a trig pillar that sits at the highest point of the walk, and the Aggin Stone which marks the county boundary.

John Rylands Library

Named after Manchester’s first multimillionaire, John Rylands Library in Deansgate is one of the most incredible examples of neo-gothic architecture across Europe; so it’s no wonder so many visitors want to venture inside and explore. Home to over 250,000 books and more than a million manuscripts, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and spend hours (or minutes!) reading.

Described as the “real-life Hogwarts”, the architectural beauty of this building is not one to be missed, and as it’s part of the University of Manchester, students can have access to one of the most awesome spaces in the city to work.

Twenty Twenty-Two

Described as Manchester’s number one ping-pong bar, this is a place not to be missed. Found on Little Lever Street in the Northern Quarter, this bar actively supports the local arts, culture, and music sector, with space available to hire every day of the week.

Perfect for letting off some steam with friends, there are ping pong tables on offer throughout the day and night, with staff even known to challenge visitors to a game, or referee any games that need an impartial hand.

Chapter One Books

A family-run bookshop in the Northern Quarter, Chapter One Books offers visitors a delightful café with the most tranquil environment – designed specifically for those looking for a quiet place to enjoy a good book. With a wide array of drinks on offer and no extra charge for alternative milk options, there’s something for everyone in this quaint store.

It’s also open for hire, so for any book lovers that have birthdays, book launches, or even baby showers coming up, Chapter One Books can cater to fit your specific needs.
