National Cinema Day is fast approaching on the 2nd September, so we’ve taken some time to pick out our favourite films that we think you should be watching to celebrate. Whether you’re a sci-fi fan, a rom-com softie, or an action-fuelled adrenaline junkie, we’ve got some great choices for you.
Romantic comedies are a guilty pleasure of many, and we’re no different. If you haven’t seen this absolute classics, this is your time to change that. You won’t regret it, trust us.
This 1993 classic is the perfect choice if you’re looking for a rom-com to get your emotions flowing. 8-year-old Jonah calls a radio talk-show on behalf of his recently widowed father, Sam, in the hopes of helping him move on and find another partner. Sam’s perfect yet tragic love story has hundreds of women desperate to meet him – but will he find another love that can bring his family back together?
Released in 2004, 50 First Dates is the comedically frustrating but loving story of Henry and Lucy – who have the perfect day together, until the next day when we discover that Lucy suffers from short-term memory loss, and does not remember the day before. Henry steps up to the challenge, and dedicates himself to make her fall in love with him over and over again, every day.
If you’re not feeling the rom-com vibe, maybe sci-fi is more up your street.
The OG Alien from 1979 is one that everyone should watch at least once. Set in the distant future, a crew on a spaceship see a distress signal, and go to check it out. When exploring the moon the signal came from, they find a hive colony of creatures – and discover that the distress call was in fact a warning to stay away. While investigating, one of the creatures is woken, and chaos very quickly ensues.
Terminator 1 is a classic, but Terminator 2 is the true hero here. Set ten years after the original, this new Terminator is even more powerful and advanced. However, another Terminator is sent back through time to protect them – resulting in some incredible fight scenes.
Looking for something action-packed to keep you on the edge of your seat? We’ve got you covered.
The first in the saga, this is all the action you could ever want and then some. Our lead character, ‘The Bride’, is a member of a deadly gang, but wants our when she finds out she’s pregnant. After escaping and meeting someone else, her wedding rehearsal is ruined by her ex-gang and ex-lover, the father of her baby. When she wakes up 4 years later and finds her baby gone, she embarks on a rampage to seek revenge. Spoiler, it gets messy.
Throwing it back now to 1981, Indiana Jones is an archaeology professor exploring the jungles in South America. In search of a biblical artefact, he has to venture across the world escaping traps and enemies to get there. This is Harrison Ford at his finest and is a great old-school action classic.
