How can I celebrate Earth Day in Manchester?

Earth Day is celebrated every year on the 22nd of April to unite the world and show support for environmental protection across the globe, and throughout its 50 years of celebration, Earth Day has evolved into an incredible range of events that are enjoyed in over 193 countries. In honour of their #InvestInOurPlanet theme this year, we have put together a list of our 4 favourite ways to celebrate Earth Day this weekend in Manchester.

  • Spend time outside

With the weather improving every day, Earth Day is the perfect time to go outside, enjoy the sunshine, and appreciate your surroundings. Manchester is an incredibly beautiful city, so whether you fancy a long stroll along the canals to be in touch with nature, fancy getting lost in one of the city’s many parks or prefer to appreciate it from a beer garden with a cold drink in hand, there’s plenty of options.

Our advice? Merge those two ideas and take a stroll down to Rain Bar, a waterside pub with incredible views and an even more incredible menu – we promise it won’t disappoint.

  • Plant something

Every home is fresher with a plant or two, and when it comes to celebrating Earth Day, one of the best things you can do is to grow life. Some like to plant seeds and nurture them but buying a plant and looking after it is just as good and much more manageable for a lot of people.

If you’re frowning at this one because you’ve got a bit of a history of dead plants, not to fear – ZZ Plants, Hedgehog Aloe, and Sansevieria (also known as snake plants!) are impressively versatile and almost impossible to kill, perfect for those lacking green fingers out there. Why not give Flourish on Tib Street a visit – they’re one of our favourite florists in Manchester and they’ll definitely help you decide what greenery is best for you to take home.

  • Visit a local Farmer’s Market

Farmer’s Markets are the perfect way to support a local natural business as well as get in touch with the sentiment of Earth Day. Manchester has some great options for you to explore, from McCalls Organics in the Northern Quarter to the Ancoats General Store in Ancoats, offering you locally grown produce.

One of our favourite places to explore is the Arndale Food Market – if you head to the back, you’ll find Strawberry Garden, where you can find the best seasonal green goods.

  • Support Local Charities

The range of charities across the city to support are endless, and we admire every single one of them for the work that they do. We’ve picked out a couple, but we’d love to hear about your favourite charities and the work that they do too. The Society for Abandoned Animals have a variety of ways you can show support and will go towards helping animals in the city find their forever home.

Lifeshare have been running for 35 years now, providing food, shelter and care to those who need it most and do what they can to fight homelessness. With ways to support ranging from donating to volunteering and getting involved, this is an amazing charity that should be appreciated every day of the year – but even more this Earth Day.

No matter how you choose to celebrate Earth Day, we hope that you have a wonderful weekend and would love to hear what you get up to – contact us on our socials to let us know!
