This year is the celebration of the Platinum Jubilee, and Queen Elizabeth is the first British Monarch to celebrate 70 years of service to the people, ever. With a four-day UK bank holiday weekend approaching to really make the most of this celebration, there’s plenty to fill your time and we can’t wait! From visiting the places in the Manchester that the Queen has visited, to celebrating the Jubilee in your own way, we’ve got the perfect options for you to choose from – so get your bunting ready.
Throughout her 70-year reign, the Queen has visited Greater Manchester many times. From walking through Spinningfields in 1971, visiting St Peters Square in 1992, to even opening the Commonwealth Games in 2002, Manchester has seen Her Royal Highness visit many times. Did you know her Majesty even visited the Coronation Street set in 1983?
Manchester has been a proud host to the royal family a number of times, and as a nation it comes as no surprise that we’re incredibly proud of the Royals – which is why there’s so many ways to celebrate over this bank holiday weekend!
With flower displays, gardens, and blooms to celebrate the Queen’s 70th Jubiliee, this year, the Manchester Flower Show is going to another level of wonderful. Shop windows, squares, streets, and statues across the city are going to be involved, offering a trail around 10 professionally designed displays for you to discover. Our personal favourite is the Queen Bee – which is yours?
Over in Sackville Gardens in the city centre, the Fit For A Queen Weekend celebration is coming on the 4th June. With some of the biggest names from the 90’s and 00’s, you can expect performances by the Vengaboys, Cascada, Atomic Kitten, The Cheeky Girls, and Big Brovaz – you do not want to miss out on this nostalgia-filled show. Get your dancing shoes on and bring your best moves, because this is going to be a night you’ll remember forever.
Deemed the ultimate alternative street party, The Refuge is hosting a variety of Manchester’s DJ’s and bands on their terrace to celebrate in true style. There will also be some fun Refuge-inspired takes on classic British snacks, including a red, white, and blue Battenburg, as well as specialty cocktails designed to be fit for a queen. Catch us on the terrace throwing shapes to the feel-good anthems they’re promising, with an incredible line-up that’s not-to-be-missed.
No matter how you’re choosing to celebrate the Jubilee and the long bank-holiday weekend, we hope you have a wonderful time – and if you’ve got any exciting events that we haven’t mentioned, let us know on our socials!
