Manchester beats London as the UK’s most liveable city

This year’s Economist Intelligence Unit Annual Global Liveability report index confirmed something that Mancunian’s have known for a while, Manchester is the UK’s most liveable city. Manchester was ranked 38th on the 2019 Global Liveability Study, ten places ahead of London, which only ranked 48th in the report.

Manchester, often dubbed as the UK’s ‘second city’, is certainly a city to be proud of. Not only is Manchester home to the likes of the Stone Roses, Oasis and the Hacienda – it’s also where the industrial revolution began, where the atom was first spilt and where the first public library originated. Are we surprised that Manchester won the accolade of the UK’s most liveable city? Not really, Manchester has come out top in the UK every year since the index began in 2011.

The report assesses which global cities provide the best or worst living conditions by ranking 140 cities according to 30 factors across five categories:

  • Healthcare
  • Stability
  • Culture and environment
  • Education
  • Infrastructure

A rating is then awarded to each global city, based on judgements from the Economist’s in-house analysts and in-city contributors.

According to the report, the world’s most liveable city is Vienna, Austria’s capital. Vienna is followed closely by Melbourne, Sydney, Osaka and Calgary. The world’s worst liveable city is Damascus, Syria’s capital, which has received the undesirable title two years in a row.
