Move-Out Day Is Approaching: 4 Ways To Get Your Deposit Back

Whether you’ve moved a few times and just want a refresher, or this is your first time moving out of rental accommodation and you’re not sure of the expectations, we’re here to help. Getting your deposit back is important so you can take that money and use it elsewhere, and there are a few things that a lot of renters can forget about that will result in losing part of their deposit. We want to help you keep as much of yours as you can, which is why we’ve put together a few helpful reminders.

One of the first things that renters overlook is leaving bits and bobs behind. You might think that the next renter might make use of the items, or if you don’t have time to get rid of a few bags and boxes of rubbish, that it isn’t the end of the world. Remember, though, someone else will have to move these items, and they will certainly charge you for it, even if it’s only a few minutes out of their time. Make sure that you’ve got rid of absolutely everything, you’ve removed all rubbish, and left the apartment with just the items that it came with.

2. Don't miss any hidden spots

We’re all guilty of it, even if we’re cleaning regularly, but there are spots that can get missed because you just don’t see them regularly. We’re talking the insides of cupboards, skirting boards, inside the oven, all spots that tend to get overlooked, but that will be an instant charge on your deposit if not cleaned properly. The best way to make sure you don’t miss anything is to give yourself plenty of time between getting ready to move and your final day, so that you’re not rushing around and accidentally missing anything that will mean you start losing money.

3. Know the Process

Various agencies and landlords will have different check-out experiences, but knowing how yours will be planned will make your life much easier. If you need a check-out inspection, make sure that this is booked in advance and that you’re ready when they arrive. Confirm where you need to leave keys, whether you’re able to leave them in the building or if you need to return them to an agency, so you don’t end up unsure on the day and wasting time that could be used going over your apartment one more time.

4. Stick to the Agreed Time

You’ll most likely have been given a time on your move-out day to leave your apartment, whether that be with a check-out appointment with an employee from your rental company, or for you to vacate and leave keys elsewhere. Make sure that you follow those rules, as if you end up overstaying and check out late, you may end up getting charged. Start planning your move-out in advance so you know that on the day, all you need to do is check out and shift your items – no one wants to be packing last-minute in a panic.
